How to Play Pickleball

Pickleball 101 - Introduction to Pickleball

Pickleball 101 is your Introduction to Pickleball.

This fun-filled, activity-based, 90 minute lesson will give you the practice you need to be able to start playing pickleball with confidence.

Designed for beginners to pickleball, go from giggles to glory - you’ll laugh, learn and play.
No previous racquet sports experience is required.

In Pickleball 101, you are going to learn to play pickleball by playing.

  • You are going to hit a tonne of balls
  • You’ll learn and practice the basics of the serve, return and volley.
  • You’ll learn the rules of pickleball and how to score, but this isn’t a theory lesson. The focus will be on what makes pickleball fun - hitting the ball back and forth over the net.

Plus you’ll learn strategies including:

  • How to gain an advantage on your opponents, by giving you more time for your shots and stealing time from your opponents.
  • How to position yourself on the court to make it harder for your opponents to win points

Played before?
If you’ve previously played pickleball or you’ve previously attended an ‘Intro to Pickleball’ or ‘Come and Try’ Pickleball session, you can jump straight into the Pickleball 102/Lesson 2 if you wish. Though we encourage you to do the Pickleball 101 Lesson 1 first, as there are tactics and strategies you’re sure to want to know that aren’t covered in most other Come and Try sessions.

Pickleball 106 - Advanced Volleying

This lesson will cover more advanced volley techniques including the roll volley and flick.

While the punch volley is great to use when the ball is above the height of the net, more advanced techniques are needed when the ball is below the height of the net - this is where the roll and flick volley’s are better shot options.

You will learn how to use roll volley’s both defensively and offensively.

Watch this video from the 1 min mark to see what a roll volley looks like.

To attend this lesson you must already be competent at the punch volley and have a DUPR of 3.1 or above.
