DUPR at Pickle Hub

DUPR - How it works

Pickle Hub DUPR

DUPR Frequently Asked Questions

Pickle Hub use the DUPR ratings system to help track a players progress as they play games and improve. This allows Pickle Hub to ensure the right players are on the right courts to allow game play at similar skill levels.

After a player has downloaded the DUPR app, created their free DUPR account and requested to join the Pickle Hub club on DUPR, there is nothing else the player needs to do. Games are automatically entered into the DUPR system by Pickle Hub's on-court tablet app.

But what is DUPR and how does it work? This page explains all of that...

How does Pickle Hub use a players DUPR rating?

This depends upon the session being played -

  • Round Robin: Players will be assigned onto courts with players who are of a similar skill level (DUPR rating) to them.
  • Fyreball:  Initial allocation onto courts (highest rating = court 1). When you lose the player with the higher rating will get preference (eg lose on court 1 the higher rated player will go down to court 2 and lower rated player to court 3).
  • FyreStorm: Initial allocation onto courts (highest rating = court 1). If you check-in without a partner you will be assigned a partner who has the closest DUPR rating to you.

Are all games recorded in DUPR?

For a Pickle Hub game to be recorded in DUPR these two need to be true:

  1. Each player in the game must have a DUPR account
  2. Upon check-in at the session, each player must of selected "Yes" to have their games recorded in DUPR. If one of the players in that game selected "No" then the game will not be recorded in DUPR.

How do I know if a game is being recorded in DUPR?

As can be seen by the image at the top of this page, the on-court table will clearly display the word "DUPR" if the game will be recorded in DUPR.

What is DUPR?

DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) is a pickleball rating system designed to provide accurate and dynamic pickleball player ratings. Unlike traditional static rating systems, DUPR's algorithm continuously adjusts ratings based on match results, ensuring that ratings reflect current skill levels. DUPR's dynamic rating system unifies pickleball across age, gender, and location by analysing match results to accurately evaluate all players across a 2.000 - 8.000 scale.

Key points about the rating

Here are the key things to know about the rating:

  1. All players regardless of age, gender or geographic location are evaluated across the same 2.000 - 8.000 scale.
  2. A player can have a singles and doubles DUPR rating, with all singles play (against all ages and genders) counting towards the singles rating and all doubles play (including mixed and gendered doubles) counting towards their doubles rating.
  3. DUPR takes into account results from leagues, tournaments, clubs and even self-posted scores to provide an accurate, reliable and real-time assessment of your score.
  4. Every time a new result is submitted, it is instantly factored into your DUPR rating

What factors does it consider to determine a rating?

  1. Points Matter. Was this a tight match or a blowout? DUPR now evaluates the closeness of the match, so a score of 21-5 will have a bigger impact on your rating than a close match of 21-19 against that same opponent
  2. Recency Matters. A match you played today will impact your rating more than a match you played six months ago.
  3. Total Match Count Matters. If you've played in a lot of matches, your rating will fluctuate less compared to a player with a lower match count.
  4. Every Match Matters (even against unrated players). Every match counts towards your rating, even if you are playing against someone who is unrated or new to DUPR.

How many matches do I need to play for an accurate rating?

Aim for at least 20 matches. Quality matters too; ensure you're playing at the right level and experiencing a mix of wins and losses in close games.

What if all the players involved are not rated?

If all players are unrated, we do not know the level of the match, so we take a guess that the level is 3.5. The outcome of the match will push one team above 3.5 and the other below to properly reflect the levels displayed by the scores of the match. With each player’s next few matches, they will be able to move quickly toward their appropriate level, especially once they are playing rated players around their skill level.

Can my rating go down if I win or up if I lose?

Games from the 9th July 2025 onwards use a new DUPR algorithm. *Prior* to the 9th July 2025, your DUPR would go up if you won or down if you lost. That is no longer the case. With the update, if you score more than expected, your DUPR rating will go up - even if you lose. If you score less, it will go down - even if you win. Read all about it here
